reasons to play assassin's creed: origins

Thursday 8 March 2018

Last year, a friend mentioned to me that the new Assassins Creed looked really quite good. At first I was a bit sceptical, the assassin's creed series has got a bit too stale and underwhelming, so naturally I thought Origins would be the same, but I was very very wrong. Origins is up there as one of my favourite games in the assassin's creed series, right next to Assassin's Creed 2. I've written a bunch of these ‘reasons to watch/play X ’ posts before and I'm back doing it again because I can't not share my love for this game.

Bayek as a main character.

Me being me, I appreciated the fact that Ubisoft made the main character black this time (cough cough black flag cough colonisers) it's super nice to see some representation in games, I’m just waiting on the day we get a proper female lead for one of the main assassin creed games. Bayek is also likeable with a decent backstory and personality.

The Setting - Egypt

The Egypt setting is so beautifully crafted and works amazingly with the open world nature of the game. The towns pyramids, tombs and countryside are so fun to explore (and loot) it's guaranteed to keep you entertained. Additionally there is such a variety of side quests, whether you're helping out a civilian with everyday tasks or investigating bloody rituals it's never boring.

Open world nature of the game

This is the first Assassin's creed I’ve played that has this level of open world and it's so much fun. The graphics and the design of Egypt really emphasise how awesome this,I especially noticed that you can see pyramids and other landmarks in the distance which is such a cool and immersive feature. Additionally the open world nature of the game means that you can explore as you want, regardless of where you are in the story. Although you might not be able to fight all the enemies at first!

Also other notable features I adore:

You can ride camels, fight cobras and war elephants, tame animals (crocodiles are my fav because it looks so weird) and participate in chariot races and gladiator battles.

Weapons

Bows are one of my favourite weapons to use in games and Origins doesn’t disappoint. There are so many types of bows and variety of bows to use, all with different ranges and damage, all designed for different uses. At first this can be a bit overwhelming but once you get used to it and figure out how to use them, they can become the most lethal and fun weapons to use.

So many elements of Origins Reminds me of Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia, which just happen to be two of my favourite games ever. With tombs, the ancient setting, decorative swords and bows, Origins has a similar nature which is super appealing to me at least!

Sooooo for me, Origins is such a breath of fresh assassin air, this game resurrects the Assassin's Creed series in my eyes, and if you've felt a similar sense of ennui towards the previous games, it just might do the same for you.

  1. I was watching the trailer for this game the other day and I have to say it does look intriguing - particularly because of the setting!
