~ Hot Cross Bun Chronicles Part 2 ~

I love fruit, and I love chocolate, so when I saw these in M&S, I definitely felt like the human embodiment of the heart eyes emoji. What can I say? I'm a sucker for that chocolate orange goodness. As a self proclaimed hot cross bun fanatic, today I'm sharing my thoughts on these cute lil' hot cross buns!

What they say:
'Chocolate and Orange Hot Cross Buns with Belgian dark chocolate chips, orange puree, candied orange & lemon peel with a hint of spice.'

What I say:

First of all, it's important to note that I never heat up my hot cross buns. Yes, I eat them straight from the packet, because I honestly don't understand the appeal of toasted or crunchy hot cross buns? I firmly maintain they should be soft and doughy all the way through! Soft and doughy forever.

First thoughts: You definitely taste the orange, the chocolate not so much.

The chocolate flavour of the bun is is very subtle. You can taste the orange in most bites but the chocolate is hit and miss; some bites taste of chocolate, but others don't. Whilst they contain  lil' dark chocolate chips, my sweet tooth says they could've done with more. I expected some in every mouthful but my expectations weren't realised. I think the chocolate taste comes from the chocolate chips, rather than the bun itself, which was a little disappointing, as I was expecting the bun to taste of orange AND chocolate (although the packet does say hint of spice, rather than hint of chocolate.)

Appearance wise, they look very appealing! They are nice and sticky on the outside, definitely not crumbly, and look at that shine! It's like a magical hot cross bun highlight! Plus texture wise, they are soft and doughy, which is clearly a very important point for me! They are super cute and small in size and look appetising, making them a snack you just keep reaching for! (hence the half empty pack, haha)

They do smell and taste nicely of orange though, and it just so happens that I am a huge fan of orange flavours.

Overall: They're cute, small, and look very appealing, but if you're looking for buns that taste of chocolate, you might be disappointed. They taste more like 'orange with a hint of chocolate' than 'chocolate & orange' hot cross buns. Decent though. Alsoa decent choice if you're looking for something a bit different, or hot cross buns without currants!

6.5/10
(0.5 added for the novelty!)

Have you tried these hot cross buns? What is your dream hot cross bun flavour!?
